12 students. Today, the school serves over 50 children directly and
indirectly, and has a staff of certified specialists in the areas of special
education, speech pathology, and physical and occupational
therapy. Children with developmental disabilities from all walks of
life are seen and served at the Francis Allen School.
When Nicolas started school at age 2, he walked with a walker
and braces. Now, at age 4, he can run, jump, and ride his bike- all
unassisted. “I can’t praise the staff at The Allen School enough;
they are excellent,” says Katy. “The staff members and therapists
have been there for years, which is important in maintaining continuity
and developing rapport with the children who attend.” As
a member of the school’s “Dream Team,” Katy and her associates
are on a mission to raise funds for much needed renovations to the
existing school and for new construction. The school has been in
the same building for over 50 years- without renovations or updates-
and they have outgrown their space. “The children served by
The Allen School deserve a better place to come and learn,” Katy
proclaimed.

Several fundraisers have been held over the last several months
to initiate the building campaign and raise awareness of The Allen
School’s purpose and mission. A private dinner was held at Glazer’s
Distributors of Arkansas in May. Glazer’s president, Richard Levi
opened the doors for guests to learn more about The Allen School
while enjoying a lavish six-course feast generously donated by
Penny & Chef Joe Gargano of Bella Arti Italian Ristorante in Hot
Springs. Chairs of the event were State Treasurer Martha Shoffner
and Governor Mike Beebe.
The Governor, along with First Lady Ginger Beebe, will host an
event for The Allen School on August 14th at the Governor’s Mansion.
Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, followed by dinner
and a live auction. Musicians with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra
and vocalist, Lawrence Hamilton will provide entertainment.
Richard Levi is co-chairing the dinner with Marilyn Reed, Nicolas’
grandmother. Information about The Allen School and the “Dreams
Need to Grow” event can be obtained by calling The Allen School
