I
n January of 2007, Helen Woodyard was diagnosed with plaque morphea,
a rare autoimmune disease that can significantly affect a patient’s
functional status with scarring, disfigurement or limited mobility if developed
over a joint. Although there is no cure for morphea, several different
approaches have been attempted to treat and control the disease, including
UVA-1 phototherapy or light therapy. A party, hosted at the home of
Kaki Hockersmith and Max Mehlburger, was held to benefit The University
of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine, Department of
Dermatology. Funds raised at the party will bring a UVA-1 phototherapy
light to Arkansas.
