y father, Stew Prosser, was a hero to many people
in his life. He was one of the first three marines
to step foot on Iwo Jima in World War II and took his service
in our armed forces to heart. As he spoke of his stint,
his vulnerability would emit; I knew that on the Fourth
of July, his thoughts were not on fireworks and BBQ, they
were on the importance of being an American and a true
patriot. When he died in 1976, his burial services were
held at the Little Rock National Cemetery. The occasion
was indeed part of life’s rich pageantry. Emotions of pride
and deep sadness become overwhelming, as the bugle
was blown and the flag that draped my father’s casket was
folded with precision and handed to my eldest brother,
Yancey. Yes, my father was a hero.
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and one special
hero we’ve met this month is Nicolas Fryar. We can all
learn a little from this brave four-year old. At birth,
Nicolas’ fate was uncertain, as he spent his first days on
a ventilator and continuously suffered seizures. Later,
Nicolas was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and his parents,
Katy and Branon, began a proactive approach in finding
the best opportunities for their son to thrive. The Allen
School was one such choice, and now Katy is working
hard to give back to the school that has given her son a
way of life once thought impossible. She shares her vision
to help The Allen School remodel and expand, which the
school desperately needs.
Our fashion spread this month showcases a true heroine
– our own Miss Arkansas 2007, Katie Bailey. I had the
opportunity to sit next to Katie at Baptist Health’s Bolo
Bash luncheon a few weeks ago and found her to be a
delight. Not only is she a true American beauty, she is
smart (she’ll finish her MBA when her reign ends) and is
laugh out loud funny. On the day of our shoot, we took
a break long enough for her to dash out to one of the
many civic events she attends so she could sing the Star
Spangled Banner – a song she says she sings an average of
twice a day. You have to love that! We wish her the best in
her future endeavors.
When I heard that Bud Whetstone was to be honored
at the KARK Community Service Awards, I became
curious about him and his philanthropic efforts. After we
met, he too became a hero in my eyes. Bud has overcome
the tragedy of his son and wife’s early deaths and truly
understands the importance of taking responsibility for
our community’s youth. We learn more about Bud in this
month’s Proust Questionnaire.
As we approach the day to celebrate our country’s independence,
my hope is that we can acknowledge all the
heroes in our lives. The small acts of courage and bravery
we witness daily should keep our hopes high as our
country is still at war. During this historic election year,
we should take a moment to reflect and appreciate where
we’ve come as a nation and be proud to call the good old
USA home. If all else fails, tune in to the 2008 Summer
Olympics beginning August 8th. When the American
gold medalists take to the podium and Old Glory is raised
behind them, you’re bound to become patriotic.
Happy Independence Day!
