notorious for enforcing.
Overall, LRJC uses dance as an
interactive tool that breaks down
inhibitions and teaches important
social skills at a pivotal age in the
lives of young adults. While cotillion
teaches a variety of partner and
line dances, including the waltz,
fox trot, tango, cha cha and the
jitterbug, memories of camaraderie
and self-esteem building have
been instilled in three generations
of Little Rock youths. Although she
has no “trick” to convince her
pupils of the importance of learning
and practicing etiquette, she
does acknowledge that parental
interaction influences participants.
While most children are excited to
attend cotillion and look forward
to dances, Kathleen sometimes has
to “make it fun and exciting for the
ones who are ‘forced’ to come.” “I
am also gratified and grateful when
parents tell me of times when their
children do something that they
learned from their Cotillion experience,”
Kathleen concluded. Certainly,
one can never underestimate
the importance of an impromptu
recollection of proper waltzing
techniques at future weddings or
formal affairs.
On Thursday July 24th, at the
Stephens YWCA, a group of young
professionals will celebrate the 60th
anniversary season of LRJC. Led
by Kathleen, the evening will allow
guest to re-learn the ballroom
dance moves of their youth. A reception,
featuring food and libations
from area restaurants, will
begin at 6:30. In traditional cotillion
fashion, a grand march line-up
will begin at 7:00, followed by an
evening of dancing. Come in cocktail
or business attire, but don’t forget…NO
GUM!
Tickets are $25.00 per person or
$45.00 a couple, and may be purchased
at the door or by contacting
the Stephens YWCA at 664-4268.
All event proceeds will benefit the
Stephens YWCA Y-Teens, a program
dedicated to finding and developing
young women leaders in the area by
developing and encouraging new
areas of community service, building
a closer relationship among the
clubs which constitute the YWCA’s
Y-Teens organization, and through
sharing mutual problems and experiences,
strive to obtain a sense of
direction in everyday living for all
its members.
