Chris Norwood to work his magic, setting the stage for a memorable
evening in the ballroom. “Chris’s ability to take a general idea and
execute an amazing result has always astounded us,” says Susan. “He’ll
be incorporating unique lighting with his floral design and with linens
in unexpected spicy hues.”
After dinner is served, three men who have truly changed the face
of medicine in Arkansas will be honored. Drs. James Suen, Kent Westbrook
and Bart Barlogie will be presented the 2008 Pat and Willard
Walker Tribute Award. “These doctors built a dream literally from the
ground up,” Herren remarked. “Their many successes and heartfelt
care have made all of us the beneficiaries of their remarkable work.”
The live auction at Gala for Life is always captivating and this year
is no exception. Beautiful jewelry designed by Doris Panos, donated
by Kenneth Edwards Fine Jewelers, will lure the discriminating bidder.
The Dallas Cowboy Football VIP Package that will give several
children with cancer the opportunity to have star treatment will be
another crowd favorite. For adventurous men, or perhaps a die-hard
biker chick, a Harley-Davidson VROD will be up for grabs. This motorcycle
is seriously loaded, and is packed with tons of torque! The lucky
winner of this item will certainly greet every straight-away with an
eager grin; the only thing outpacing the RPMs will be their heartbeat!
Rachelle Sanders, executive director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller
Photography by Nancy Nolan
Cancer Institute Foundation, feels truly blessed with the gift of Susan
and Herren as chairs for the event. “I’ve worked on many events, from
New York to Boston to Little Rock, and I have never partnered with
such amazing volunteers,” says Rachelle. “No detail is too big or too
small – the Hickingbothams take charge and get it done.”
Herren has served on the foundation board for the cancer center for
over 5 years. His father, Frank Hickingbotham was a founding member
of the foundation. “Our family has tried to continue that leadership,
and we have encouraged our children to be a part of community
involvement,” says Susan. As mother of daughter Hayden, 12, and
son Christian, 5, Susan feels she has learned more by being a mother
than through any other endeavor. “My kids challenge me to be my
best,” she revealed. “They are the source of my greatest joys.” Not too
long ago, Hayden requested that in lieu of receiving birthday gifts that
items be donated to charity. That speaks volumes about the family
tradition of philanthropy.
So what Commodores hit will bring Herren and Susan to the dance
floor? “I like Brick House because it reminds me of my wife,” coos
Herren. “Well,” Susan objects, “I like Just to be Close to You because it
is the perfect song to slow dance to with your favorite dance partner.”
We bet the Hickingbothams will enjoy both and know through their
hard work and dedication that all who attend will as well.
