In the Conway Spotlight Clint Conque
Coach Clint Conque
Clint Conque became the head football coach of the University of
Central Arkansas (UCA) Bears in December of 1999. During his tutelage
he has brought his beloved sport to the forefront in Conway and has
gained national recognition for his coaching efforts and winning results.
This fall, Conque, his coaching staff and players will help Conway and
UCA celebrate 100 years of football tradition at the university. Conque
hopes to leave his footprint for the next 100 years.
A graduate of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, La., Conque
played collegiately at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. Conque
continued to play football after graduation with the Los Angeles Raiders
of the NFL. An injury cut his pro stint short, and Conque headed back
to Nicholls State University to begin his coaching career. During this
25 year span, Conque has coached in the Louisiana High School ranks,
Nicholls State University, McNeese State University, Samford University
and Louisiana Tech University before accepting the head coaching job
at UCA.
“The tradition of UCA football lured me here and the energy and
excitement of the team and fans keep me here”, says Conque. “In the
beginning I inherited some great kids, and today I can say we have the
winningest college football program in the state.”
Under Conque’s guidance, the Bears have successfully made the transition
from NCAA Division II to Division I FCS (Football Championship
Subdivision). In 2006-their first Division I season- the Bears exceeded
expectations with an 8-3 record and finished the season ranked in the
Top 25. They followed it up in the 2007 season by finishing in a secondplace
tie in the tough Southland Conference. Bears fans have joined in
as the 12th man like never before. “As an avid Bears fan and a trustee
of the University,” says Rush Harding, “I consider the manner in which
Clint and his staff run our program as important.” our football players
compete fiercely,” adds Rush. “The personality of our team reflects the
personality of our coach.”
During his tenure, Conque has seen Estes Stadium undergo a number
of enhancements from the renovation of the East side stands, expanded
chair back seating, and a host of improvements inside the facility. With
a booming tailgating experience on adjacent Bruce Street and the new
state of the art videoboard, Estes Stadium is rapidly becoming one of the
nation’s best venues at the FCS level. Nine of the top 10 Estes Stadium
crowds have come during the Conque era.
Fans will have plenty to cheer about this fall with standout quarterback
Nathan Brown returning for his fourth season. Named the 2007
Southland Conference offensive Player of the Year, Brown has been
pegged as one of the top 5 quarterbacks in college football.
Conque concedes that his family is a big part of his coaching success.
“My wife Angele’ and our sons, Chasse, Benton and Zachary have
sacrificed a lot and continue to give me strength and remain loving and
loyal.” The Conque family has embraced Conway and UCA unconditionally.
The Conque’s endowed a scholarship in their name for the School
of Business which proves his commitment level. “UCA and Conway are
better places because of Clint and his family,” says Rush. “He has put his
imprint on our community and made a difference in the lives of our students.
We are looking forward to football season with much excitement.
Clint and his family have woven themselves into the fabric of UCA and
Conway and his family is an invaluable asset to both.”
