for this month’s cover and feature story gave
us gals at Inviting Arkansas the ache for the social
season to begin. The lighter event load in the summer
months has allowed our staff to take a trip or
two and to play catch up on life. But I’m here to tell
you- we’re ready to don our black-tie garb and capture
what is going to be a great kick-off to the social
season: The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute
Gala for Life 2008 on September 5.
Anytime the Hickingbothams take the helm of
an event, it is a success. They are serious and genuine
about raising record funds for their cause while
producing one of the most enjoyable evenings for
charity function attendees. Their taste is impeccable,
and the two compliment one another’s strengths in
chairing a major fundraiser. This powerhouse couple
share all the gala details with us this month.
An exquisite menu, to-die-for items on the auction
block and entertainment by one of the hottest music
groups from the 70s (the Commodores!!) ensures for
a smashing event.
Make sure and peruse our special features from
Conway this month. We’ve profiled some of this
booming town’s hottest movers and shakers. And
some are near and dear to my heart. Gary Strain of
Strain Photography changed my diapers as a child
and I, in turn, changed the diapers of his daughters.
Throughout high school and college I worked
for Gary and his wife Nancy and have often claimed
them as my surrogate parents. To visit with them and
learn all the exciting things they are incorporating in
their photography business with daughters Brandy
and Jackie made me proud. It also reminded me that
times– they are a changin’.
A couple of months ago we launched our virtual
online edition of Inviting Arkansas. The response has
been overwhelming, and we thank you kind readers
for your comments and suggestions. This month we
further expand the content on our website by featuring
additional Charity Close-Ups on The Allen School
and Big Brothers Big Sisters and keeping you up to
date on all the “goings on” with our Inviting Blog.
We’ll fill you in on the daily fashion finds from area
boutiques, let you know if an area chef is cooking
up something new and take you behind the scenes
of some of the great events we cover. Beginning this
month we’ll also have a guest blogger, Kortu Momlu-
Briggs, Arkansas’ beloved fashion designer who made
it to the big time as one of the contestants on Bravo’s
Project Runway. We want feedback, so please share
your thoughts.
