Dining In Dining Out Lemon – a crepe ˆ & coffee company Photography by Nancy Nolan
Brett and Walt Todd like to travel and in doing
so they seek out dining venues not available in Little
Rock. Through their travels, the couple has been lured
to a growing trend in dining – the crepe. ˆ Now they
have taken their love for this versatile dish and opened
up shop in historic Hillcrest serving up an array of
sweet and savory crepes ˆ at Lemon.
Walking through the door of Lemon is an instant
gift for the senses. The aroma of the fresh brewed
coffee and the smell of the crepes ˆ being created beckon
the taste buds immediately. The Todd’s have used
a citrus palette throughout Lemon, using- of courselemon
yellow with orange and lime green accents to
create a casual and cheery atmosphere in which to enjoy
a tasty crepe. ˆ The décor is simple with bistro tables
placed throughout with a stainless steel bar counter
with comfy barstools. A fun and unexpected scored
black concrete floor with a glitter acrylic treatment designed
by Angelfish is a great conversation piece.
Why the name Lemon? The crepe ˆ originated in
Brittany, the northwest region of France and the simple
dish was created without fillings with sprinkled powdered
sugar and a splash of lemon juice. You’ll find
The Lemon on the menu which is made with butter,
whipped cream, sugar and lemon to squeeze.
The word crepe ˆ is French for pancake, from the
Latin crispus, meaning crisp. At Lemon you will find
the crepes ˆ tender with a tinge of crispness. On our visit
we sampled The Lox Crepe ˆ from the savory choices
and the Fresh Fruit from the sweet options. Served
with smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, boiled egg
and purple onion, the Lox crepe ˆ was filling and it is no
surprise that is has thus far been a crowd favorite. To
satisfy our sweet tooth, the Fresh Fruit crepe ˆ is served
with the freshest fruit in season with whipped cream
and powdered sugar. Like most of the crepes ˆ on Lemon’s
menu – a wedge of lemon is served on the side.
Another favorite on the menu is the Sticky Crepe. ˆ
Served with honey, preserves and butter, the Sticky is
delicious and worth a few extra napkins.
With an ideal location on Kavanaugh, business
men and women headed downtown for their workday
can zip right into Lemon and order from 10 savory
choices and 10 sweet choices to make eating on the run
easy, for the most part healthy and definitely tasty. The
prices range from $5 - $10 at Lemon, making breakfast,
lunch or afternoon snack affordable. As Hillcrest
is a neighborhood known for foot traffic, Lemon is a
nice spot to enjoy a fantastic meal and people watch.
This venue makes for a great place to meet friends after
dropping the kids off at school and savoring one of
the best cups of coffee we’ve had. The coffees and teas
Brett Todd, Owner
served at Lemon are by Intelligentsia, a company that
only provides in-season beans, that as a coffee snob
who likes her coffee black and flavorable without being
over-powering, was pleasantly surprised. Lemon offers
Café au Lait, Chai Latte, Cappuccino, Espresso, Latte
and loose leaf hot tea. Freshly-squeezed lemonade and
orange juice are also on the menu.
In creating the perfect crepe, ˆ
the secret is in the
batter. At Lemon they have it perfected while offering
the freshest fillings available to compliment the batter
concoction.
We welcome Lemon to the neighborhood and look
forward to many visits there.
Bon Appetit, y’all.
