When producing an event, there are
certain questions one must ask. Is the
location large enough? Where will the
band go? Should we ask the Gangsters
to check their Tommy Guns at the door?
Just your typical party check list, if you’re
recreating one of the most culturally
significant eras in modern history.
As Production Chair for the American
Cancer Society’s A Vintage Affair, Karen
Greer was given the task of recreating the
Roaring 20s – the decade of Jazz, Gatsby,
Flappers and the Lindy Hop. Greer, along
with her co-chair Amber Burley, has been
busy finding ways to turn the Little Rock
Club into a classic Speakeasy.
“We want people to step back in time
as soon as they step through the door,”
said Greer. “It’s an exciting theme and
allows us to have a lot of fun with the
décor, music and entertainment.”
By its very nature a Speakeasy is somewhat
mysterious and covert, so attendees
will be given a password to get in and
they should expect a few surprises once
inside. “Period-costumes and Charleston
lessons prior to the Vintage Affair are
highly encouraged,” said Greer.
“The committee picked the Roaring
20s because we wanted this first Vintage
Affair to set the bar high,” said Greer.
A Vintage Affair is a new concept to
the American Cancer Society. The 2008
event is the first-time the organization
will host a historically themed fundraising
party in Little Rock. Each year the
theme of the event will change, but the
ultimate goal – to make cancer history –
will remain the same.
“The American Cancer Society has
made tremendous progress in the fight
against cancer,” Greer noted. “But there
is still much to do. We look forward to
the days when we will read about cancer
in history books and not in headlines.
This event is a way to make that happen.”
The American Cancer Society, which
was founded in 1913, is dedicated to
eliminating cancer as a major health
problem by saving lives, diminishing
suffering and preventing cancer through
research, education, advocacy and
service. For more information anytime,
