y good friend and doctor, Steve Hathcock, once
told me that what we do to our bodies in our 20’s
and 30’s, we pay for in our 40’s and 50’s. His words came
as a blow. As a sporadic (at best) workout person, and not
choosing the healthiest diet to abide by, I felt doomed to
fall apart at the seams. I came to notice over the last couple
of years that aches and pains occur in parts of my body I
didn’t know existed, not to mention the force of gravity
taking hold. I wasn’t enjoying this journey we call aging,
so I decided to act on it. I joined an exercise class at Health
& Fitness In The Heights taught by Carol Fulmer, who is
about to turn “the new 50.” Attending my first class was a
little intimidating, to say the least. Finding the proper attire
to hide or hold in most or some of my sins was a challenge.
Reconnecting with my once agile body left me feeling inept
and uncoordinated. But, like the little train that said, “I
think I can” – I kept after it and six weeks later I have a new
appreciation for working out. I am inspired daily by Carol,
who teaches 6 classes a week, and by the folks in my class
who vary in age, gender and physical fitness. We exercise
and laugh together and I find my day a little empty if I
miss jump-starting my body, soul, and mind.
We feature several active folks who are of AARP age
this month. Most Arkansans are familiar with Dr. David
Lipschitz – he’s the physician for the aging and aged. His
dedication to treating, educating and researching at the
Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging at UAMS is known
worldwide. He encourages us all to not just endure aging
but to embrace it. Our community is fortunate to have his
knowledge and compassion and Inviting Arkansas is proud
to have him share his wisdom with us this month.
When I visited with Henry Hawk of Active Living at
Baptist Health, he was busy teaching an exercise class at the
Patrick Henry Hays Senior City (more on this great place in
another issue.) His technique and the level of fitness these
80+ year-olds have obtained blew me away. They were
pumping iron, strengthening their flexibility and laughing
all the while. I found each of them inspiring; though it was
a brief encounter, Henry motivated me to no end.
The fear of boredom sets in when I think of retirement.
How will I keep stimulated? Although I’m not at that point
in life yet, I do think about it. After meeting Ann Leek
of LifeQuest, I know there are options to keep my brain
busy not just when I throw in my career towel, but now
if I desire. LifeQuest is a nonprofit organization created by
mature folks for mature folks. Hearing about the speakers,
classes and friendships made at LifeQuest was exciting and
I plan on satisfying my curiosity by taking a few classes
that are offered.
We welcome two new youngsters to our staff this
month: Taylor Durbin and Luci Kittrell have joined the
Inviting team. When you meet these energetic souls at an
event, please welcome them. We’re happy to have them.
We are very excited to announce that Inviting Arkansas
will be the first Central Arkansas magazine to offer our
complete issues online in an interactive format. Since we’ll
be “virtual” now, Mom who lives in Wisconsin can see that
gorgeous new dress you wore to the black-tie fundraiser
you’d been talking about for months. Missed an event due
to your summer vacation on the coast of Spain? Not to
worry – we will feature video clips from some of your favorite
events. See the venue, meet the chairs and experience
the event by visiting our website – www.invitingarkansas.
com, and click the link to view our issue online. Please give
us your feedback and let us know what you think.
Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there. And an
extra special one to David, Granddad (pg. 51) and Steven
Jones.
